The meat for the unconventional burgers is sourced from animals shot at their homes in the Brandenburg forests, an approach lauded as humane and more environmentally friendly than industrialised slaughter.

The bright red store not far from Senefelderplatz serves everything from the latest Smashburger to traditional Berlin specialities like spareribs and sausage. The menu also includes vegetarian options, such as the smoky mushroom burger or the sweet potato burger. Long tables and benches invite larger groups to linger, while the patio provides outdoor seating in summer. The burgers are not cheap but the quality is top notch.

The Bird

An exciting mix of classic and creative burger variations can be found in the Prenzlauer Berg branch of The Bird. Using dry aged entrecote meat, the high-quality burgers are served in English muffins instead of typical burger buns. The burger joint also offers vegetarian and vegan options and the food is prepared quickly and thoroughly to order.

At Lily Burger & Steaks, you can choose between unusual burger creations using organic meat and versions with tofu for vegetarians. The restaurant has almost achieved a cult status and always has a long queue outside. The FBI New York burger is particularly impressive, containing a huge 200g (7oz) patty.

Fans of the 1960s should visit The Sixties Diners on Mehringdamm, where teddy boy hairstyles and rock ’n‘ roll music create a nostalgic atmosphere. This restaurant serves American salads, burgers and jacket potatoes in an authentically furnished diner.
